Lake Oconee Humane Society is a non-profit animal welfare organization serving the rural counties surrounding Lake Oconee in central Georgia. We are dedicated to reducing pet homelessness and helping pets and their owners have the best quality of life available. Our programs include rescue & adoption of over 300 animals a year, distribution of over 80,000 pounds of free pet food through local food banks and churches, on site low-cost spay/neutering of about 2000 animals/year, TNVR and a medical assistance fund. With a limited staff, we utilize more than 100 volunteers to help run our shelter and programs.

Rascal is a very special kind of dog: a 9 year old Shih Tzu who had to have both of his eyes surgically removed. Undeterred, he navigates the world with remarkable confidence, strolling around his foster mom’s house and yard like he can see every corner. He loves everyone, makes adorable little gremlin noises, and is a true velcro pup who wants nothing more than to be snuggling in a lap or soaking up some belly rubs. He sleeps through the night, enjoys exploring, eats with enthusiasm, and is mastering leash skills…even if he sometimes prefers his own direction.
Because Rascal is blind and has some unique quirks, he’ll need the best kind of human: someone patient, present, and committed to understanding his special needs. He doesn’t like to share food, occasionally gets overwhelmed by his doggy foster siblings, and is still working on house training, so frequent outdoor breaks or belly bands may be needed. He also has separation anxiety, so he thrives with someone who is home often.
